Let us introduce you to our preferred breed of homestead pig, the Kunekune (pronounced koonee-koonee) pig. The Kunekune is a small breed of domestic pig originating from New Zealand. These adorably, hairy pigs have a rather rotund build and usually have wattles hanging from their lower jaws. They range in color from black and white, to ginger, cream, gold-tip, black, brown and tricolor. One of the best things about these guys is their sweet disposition and friendly nature. Many of us have heard unfortunate stories of angry boars and protective sows. With small children around, we wanted to choose a breed that would pose absolutely no threat to our little ones. These pigs have been perfect in that respect.
Another great thing about them is their ability to graze and thrive on pasture. They grow slower and don’t get as large as commercial meat pigs, but they are content to graze good pasture, or eat grass or alfalfa hay.
In our opinion they are the perfect homestead pig!
